l have learning and reading disability. I knew of an App that could help me. but since I had no computer, I could not use it. With the computers, I downloaded the App. It has made a big difference to my ability to learn. Now, my grades are up, I know I am going to graduate. That makes me so happy and I feel great about myself.

I take school very seriously now. With the computers, I can research and complete my assignments. It has helped a lot with my school work. Also, the computers have helped me stay in touch with my Mom who is in BC. That has been great.

The computers are extremely helpful for many of the students. Most of the students do not have computers at home and therefore require them to do research and learn how to compile various types of assignments … Although we do have 9 desktop computers at the Centre, the area in which they are located is in a busy classroom and often it is hard to concentrate when other teaching and classes are taking place. The laptops allow girls to work in quieter spaces and they can then concentrate better and this allows them to be more productive.

The laptops from Amakon Women Empowerment Inc have made a huge difference for my critically at-risk students. Laptops allow them to use technology that they do not have at home. For example, in our Grade 10 class, out of twelve students only two have access to laptops at home. Just being able to create a Gmail account, a process that we take for granted, is a step they take towards becoming young adults. Many jobs require an email address to apply and these laptops have put my students on a more even footing with others. Furthermore, the laptops allow them to do the research needed for their assignments. Without the laptops their learning would only include a few printed resources, as Cornwall Alternative School does not have a library. As well, the laptops have allowed students to access coding programs that they did not have access to before. With more careers and jobs needing an understanding of coding, the laptops are invaluable. Finally, the laptops give the students a sense of normalcy, has improved the learning and lives of my students.

I use these laptops for school assignments and sometimes for personal stuff. If we didn’t have them, I would have to go downtown to the library and use computers there but with my twins it would probably be pretty difficult and would not happen. Having everyone support us here (at the SSSC) is such a good thing for us, it helps us to be moving forward and it's great for motivating us.

I use the laptops to write essays, research, all sorts of things. It's really amazing how it has helped me keep up with my studies. It's crazy how much people helping out makes me want to succeed. My main goal is to do better for my son, be a good mom., a good example and graduate. Ever since I had my son I have a real motivation to go to school and graduate. I've never had good grades until now and the laptops have played a big part in that. It will help me reach my goal of graduating.

My daughter and I would like to thank you so much for the Christmas gifts and food hamper. We were just amazed at your generosity! Being sent home because of Covid was very stressful for us and receiving these wonderful gifts really cheered us up. It was a blessing having these groceries to cook up a festive dinner which we all so enjoyed. You sure did brighten our holiday. Thank you for being so thoughtful!

Firstly, I want to thank you for the privilege of being able to take this course. I loved the teacher who had a way of explaining patiently to all of us not only about the computer but to help each of us achieve our goal. I enjoyed not only meeting the different ladies but the fellowship and encouragement we each felt with one another. I was able to gleam different ways to do up a card to give a student in the school. What blessed me was anyone no matter what their age or background could learn to use a computer even if they had no training and understanding before this. Thank you again for the opportunity to grow and learn in this area.

The class was very helpful. I had found using my pc very confusing, to the point of being afraid that I might do damage or lose something. It was very enlightening to begin to think of my pc as a specific machine no different, for instance, than a coffee maker. A machine that could become a great help, a time saver in fact. I learned how to manipulate and correct, to add content and pictures. It is fun to dress up a letter or add pictures to something I'm working on or send pictures of my great grand children. Mostly my computer is used for personal stuff.

Taking the class made my job as a Peer Mentor that much easier. Watching how the teacher was finding out stuff on the web made me more adventurous with acquiring new skills. Being able to add pics to a page is a plus as well . Thanks to the teacher for being so patient with me

I had a very basic and limited computer knowledge. So, when I saw the poster of free computer literacy course, I did not hesitate to register. From the beginning I found this course extremely helpful. Our instructor is an excellent teacher. She has a big heart and patience and made the course very easy to follow. That makes me so happy and I feel great about myself. Not only have I this computer knowledge in my mind, but I also like to share those to anyone who have no computer skills at all. I want to take this opportunity to send my great appreciation to our Coordinator and instructor, without you I would still have zero computer skills.

The computer class makes a big change in my life. I am always thinking that I am a small potatoes. So, I don’t need any resume or I won’t be able to learn any computer skills. But now with this computer class finally have created my own resume. The Microsoft Word won’t make my resume “big” but it’s impressive. Now, I have more confidence and courage to go out for job hunting.

I always thought that it would be awesome if I could have my own cookbook. Now my dream comes true; with the course, I will have a cookbook with a nice cover page, a table of contents and lots of videos and pictures inserting in my recipes. Today I feel so different from yesterday. The world is much bigger and the sun is much brighter. I can’t make myself be “big” in one day but I know I could do something “big” by continuous learning along with a positive attitude and a never give up determination. My cookbook will be amazing.

I like knowing about what my kids are learning in school so I can help them. With my not understand English, I cannot help them. With this course I am understanding a little and I can read with them. (BK, this narrative was edited to make it understandable as BK is just learning English) My goal for the class was to improve my computer skills to help me study English, and help me to find job in future, and to help my children with their study as well. It has helped me in study English and with helping my kids with school. I want to take more class to help with job in the future.

I was shut-in at home for 3 months, so appreciated the versatility that it gave to me. I would and will very much recommend this course to my friends. Even though they are retired like me it is great to be able to make good use of a computer to connect with friends and relatives especially when you are shut in.
